اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This is the core dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would make when praying for rain, particularly during times of drought or when rain was scarce. It's a direct and earnest plea for Allah's mercy and provision, suitable for any time the community or an individual feels the need for rain.
How to Read
This dua is often recited during the Eid prayer, specifically during the congregational prayer for rain (Salat al-Istisqa'). The Prophet ﷺ, when praying for rain, would raise his hands, turning his back towards the Qiblah and his face towards the people, and would often repeat this phrase multiple times, showing urgency and earnestness. While it can be recited individually, its communal aspect is significant. It's recommended to make this supplication with sincerity, humility, and a firm belief in Allah's power to answer.
Virtues & Benefits
The benefits of seeking rain through dua are immense. Rain is a mercy from Allah (Al-Qur'an 42:28) and the means by which He revives the earth and provides sustenance. The Prophet's ﷺ own practice of making this dua highlights its importance in seeking Allah's blessing. When the Prophet ﷺ saw rain, he would say: 'It is a mercy.' (Sahih Muslim 899). Reciting this dua acknowledges our dependence on Allah for all provisions, including something as essential as water, fostering gratitude and reliance on the Creator.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that a man entered the mosque on Friday and the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon. The man said, 'O Allah's Messenger, the wealth has been destroyed and the family is hungry, so pray to Allah for us.' So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1013). In another narration, it is mentioned that during the time of the Prophet ﷺ, rain was withheld for a period, causing hardship. The Prophet ﷺ then led the people in prayer for rain, raising his hands and supplicating: 'O Allah, give us rain from Your provision, which is sufficient, plentiful, life-giving, and beneficial, not harmful, not untimely.' Then it was said to him, 'O Allah's Messenger, do you want to have the clouds rain?' He said, 'Yes.' So the clouds gathered, and it rained heavily. He prayed until it rained until Friday next. Then on the following Friday, a man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger, the roads have been blocked by the rain.' The Prophet ﷺ smiled and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' He pointed with his hand, saying, 'Look! The clouds have parted from around Medina.'
