اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This supplication is specifically recited during times of drought when the land is parched and there is a dire need for rain. It is usually performed as part of the congregational prayer known as Salat al-Istisqa (the Prayer for Seeking Rain). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that when people complained to him about drought, he would lead them in this prayer. It's a collective act of seeking Allah's mercy when the usual means of sustenance are threatened.
How to Read
Salat al-Istisqa is a specific prayer. It is typically offered in an open area outside the city, in a manner similar to the Eid prayer, but with the intention of seeking rain. It involves two rak'ahs, followed by a sermon. During the prayer and the sermon, the Imam and congregation often raise their hands and make fervent supplications for rain, often turning their cloaks inside out as a symbolic gesture of turning to Allah and seeking His blessings. The supplication 'Allahumma aghithna' is the core of this plea.
Virtues & Benefits
The primary benefit is fulfilling a Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and seeking Allah's direct mercy. When the community comes together in sincere supplication, it strengthens their bond and reminds them of their absolute reliance on Allah. Allah's mercy is vast, and He responds to the sincere call of His servants. The Quran emphasizes Allah's power over the heavens and the earth, stating: 'And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings preceding His mercy, and We send down pure water from the sky' (Al-Furqan 25:48). Rain is a sign of Allah's blessing and provision for His creation.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, 'A man entered the Masjid on Friday and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering the Khutbah. The man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, the camels are dying, the roads are cut off, and the sustenance is scarce." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hands and said: "O Allah, give us rain (Allahumma aghithna)." Anas added: "By Allah, we did not see any cloud in the sky, nor any sign of rain. Then, a cloud appeared like a shield. When it passed over the pulpit, it rained. So the rain started pouring down the roof of the Masjid, and the river flowed. We went out after the rain and found that the ground was wet. That day, the Prophet ﷺ smiled and his face beamed." Sahih al-Bukhari 6306. This hadith clearly illustrates the Prophet's ﷺ direct supplication for rain when the need arose.
