اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا
O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain! O Allah, grant us rain!
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna
When to Read
This powerful and direct supplication is made by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during times of drought and need for rain. It's a call to Allah when the land is dry, crops are failing, and people and animals are suffering from lack of water. We can recite this dua whenever we observe a need for rain, or even proactively during periods where rain is scarce, remembering the Prophet's ﷺ own practice.
How to Read
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would raise his hands while making this dua, turning his back towards the Qiblah and raising his hands until his armpits were visible. This gesture signifies earnestness and humility before Allah. He would repeat it three times. While raising hands this way is specifically for seeking rain in times of need, the core is the sincere and repeated invocation of Allah for His mercy.
Virtues & Benefits
Seeking rain through dua is a direct act of reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and an acknowledgment of His power over all creation. The Quran emphasizes Allah as the One who sends down rain, which is a source of life and sustenance: "And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings preceding His mercy, and We send down from the heaven pure water - That We may give life thereby to a dead land and provide it as drink to what We have created of livestock and many people." (Al-Furqan 25:48-49). The Prophet's ﷺ repetition of the dua highlights the urgency and importance of seeking Allah's help in times of hardship. It also reminds us that even in environmental needs, our ultimate recourse is to our Creator.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people appealed to Allah's Messenger ﷺ during a drought that occurred during his time. He ordered that a shelter be built for him in the Musalla and he prayed two Rakat (of voluntary prayer) and made dua for rain. He turned his back towards the Qibla and faced the people, and stood for a long time and raised his hands and invoked Allah. Then he descended and prayed two Rakat of prayer and offered a sermon, and he made mention of Allah's blessings and His power. He said: 'Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna.' (O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 1014)
