When to Read

This dua is recited during a drought or when rain is scarce and needed. It's particularly poignant when we consider the struggles of the elderly and those with chronic illnesses who are most vulnerable to the hardships brought on by lack of water and its associated effects like heat and scarcity of food.

How to Read

Raise your hands, palms facing upwards, and recite this earnest plea to Allah. It's recommended to repeat it three times. Remember that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often repeat his supplications for emphasis and sincerity. This dua is most effective when uttered with deep humility, conviction, and a sincere heart, acknowledging Allah's absolute power over all things.

Virtues & Benefits

Seeking Allah's help for rain is a direct manifestation of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah). It reminds us that sustenance and relief come solely from Him. When we make dua for rain, especially with the intention of benefiting the vulnerable, it signifies compassion and a connection to the struggles of others within the Ummah, a quality highly beloved by Allah. The act of praying for rain itself is a reflection of our dependence on Allah's creation and His mercy.

Narrated Anas: The people of the desert requested the Prophet (ﷺ) to ask Allah to send rain for them. He asked Allah for rain for them three times. He said, 'By Allah, Allah's rain is not less than that in the sky.' Then it rained a whole week. The people came to the Prophet (ﷺ) again and complained that it was too much, and the houses were being washed away. He said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' Then the rain stopped and the sun shone. The people said to the Prophet (ﷺ), 'The Prophet (ﷺ) asked Allah for rain, and then he said: 'O Allah, around us and not on us.'
