اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا، اللَّهُمَّ أَغِثْنَا.
O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain; O Allah, grant us rain.
Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna.
When to Read
This dua is recited during times of drought or when seeking rain for the land and its inhabitants. It is particularly appropriate to make this dua during the Friday sermon (khutbah) when the Imam makes this supplication, and the congregation responds 'Ameen' and raises their hands. It can also be made at any other suitable time when rain is needed, especially during the rainfall itself when the Prophet ﷺ said it is a time when the gates of mercy are open.
How to Read
This supplication is simple and direct. Raise your hands, turning your palms upwards towards the sky, and repeat the phrase 'Allahumma aghithna' three times. It is important to recite it with sincerity, conviction, and a humble heart, recognizing that rain is a blessing from Allah and that He is the only one who can provide it. It is also recommended to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ by performing ghusl (ritual bath) and wearing clean clothes when heading out for the Eid prayer, which also involves a prayer for rain.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua for rain is a direct act of worship, acknowledging Allah's absolute power and mercy. It fosters reliance on the Creator, reminding us that sustenance and blessings come solely from Him. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to seek rain when it is withheld, understanding its vital role in sustaining life and the environment. The Quran states, 'And it is He who sends the winds as glad tidings before His mercy, until, when they have carried the heavy clouds, We drive them to a dead land and bring rain upon it, and bring forth [with it] all fruits. Thus will We bring forth the dead; perhaps you will remember' (Al-A'raf 7:57). Therefore, asking for rain is asking for Allah's mercy, which brings life, growth, and removes hardship.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, a man stood up and said: "O Allah's Messenger! The rain has destroyed the property and cut off the routes for the travelers, so please ask Allah to withhold it." So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said: "O Allah! Around us and not on us." Then he said: "O Allah! On the plateaus and the mountains, on the bushes and the valleys, and on the places where herbs grow." Anas added: 'The rain stopped and they went out walking in the sunshine.' Sahih al-Bukhari 1012. In another narration, when the Prophet ﷺ made dua for rain, he would say: "Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna, Allahumma aghithna (O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain, O Allah, grant us rain)." Sahih al-Bukhari 6306.
