اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبْ نَافِعاً
O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.
Allahumma sayyiban naafi'an
When to Read
This dua is recited when the weather turns particularly cold, or when there's a fear of frost. It's an expression of seeking Allah's help to turn potentially harmful weather into something beneficial. It can be said as the cold begins, or when preparing for a harsh spell.
How to Read
Recite this with sincerity, acknowledging that all power and control over the weather belongs to Allah. Imagine the cold air, the biting wind, and the frost forming, and supplicate to your Lord, the Creator of all these elements, to make them a source of good rather than harm. Raise your hands if possible, as is customary when making dua.
Virtues & Benefits
When the wind blew harshly, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say: 'O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it was sent with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it was sent with.' (Sahih Muslim 899). While this specific hadith is for the wind, the principle applies to seeking protection from the harshness of cold and frost. This dua for rain, "Allahumma sayyiban naafi'an," specifically asks for the weather event to be beneficial, a crucial prayer when cold can bring hardship. It teaches us reliance on Allah for all aspects of our lives, including the weather.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'The people were afflicted with drought in the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) during his life. While the Prophet (ﷺ) was delivering the Khutbah on a Friday, the Bedouins came (the other Bedouins, not the ones who were present). They complained to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about the drought. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his hands and prayed for rain... Then it rained heavily until the next Friday... And it rained until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. Then it rained heavily until the next Friday. So the people came complaining: 'O Allah's Messenger! The houses are destroyed because of the rain!' So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' He said, 'And the clouds were forming (in the sky) and were moving away from the right and left, then the clouds were getting dissolved (and disappearing). And the rain was pouring down like pots and pans (i.e., falling in large drops).' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6306)
