Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 1032

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

O Allah, let it be a beneficial downpour.

Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an

When to Read

This supplication is recited by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when the rain began to fall, especially when there was a concern about excessive or harmful rain. It's a way to ask Allah to make the rain a source of good and benefit, rather than a cause of destruction or hardship.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a hopeful heart as the rain starts. The Prophet ﷺ would expose his body slightly to the rain while saying this, signifying his acceptance and welcome of Allah's decree, while simultaneously seeking its benefit. It's a moment to reflect on Allah's power and mercy.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua embodies our reliance on Allah for sustenance and our prayer for His blessings. Rain is a vital mercy from Allah, bringing life to the land and providing for His creation. By asking for beneficial rain, we are seeking Allah's help in averting floods, damage, or drought, and ensuring that this blessing is truly a source of good for us and our environment. The Prophet's ﷺ action of exposing himself to the rain while making this dua shows acceptance of Allah's decree and a proactive seeking of benefit from His blessings.

Source & Authentication

Narrated Anas: During the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, a drought occurred. While the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the Friday sermon, the Bedouins came, and they complained of the drought. So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and supplicated, and the clouds gathered. Then it rained, and it rained so much that the ground became wet. Then it rained the next Friday, and a man stood up while the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The horses and the livestock are perishing (due to too much rain).' So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' Then the clouds dispersed, and the rain stopped, and the sun appeared. And it rained from the next Friday to the next Friday. Then the Prophet ﷺ was delivering the sermon, and a man stood up and said, 'O Allah's Messenger! The buildings have collapsed and the roads are flooded.' So the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, around us and not on us.' Then the clouds dispersed, and the rain stopped. [Sahih al-Bukhari 1032] *Note: The specific phrase 'Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an' is associated with the Prophet's ﷺ reaction to the rain itself, as mentioned in other narrations. This hadith illustrates the Prophet's ﷺ supplications concerning rain in general.*
