Dua for Beneficial Rain: Allahumma Sayyiban Nafi'an

Rain
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 6306

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.

Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an

When to Read

This dua is specifically recited when the rain begins to fall, especially when it appears heavy or potentially destructive. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to say this to invoke Allah's mercy and ensure the rain brings benefit rather than harm.

How to Read

Recite this dua clearly and with sincerity as the rain starts. It is recommended to expose oneself slightly to the rain while making this dua, as the Prophet ﷺ did. Imagine the water as a blessing from Allah and ask Him to make it a source of goodness for the land and its inhabitants. The act of raising hands, while not explicitly mentioned for this specific dua, is generally permissible for supplication when there is no specific prohibition.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua transforms a potentially fearful natural event into an opportunity for seeking divine blessing. It shifts our perspective from seeing rain as a mere weather phenomenon to recognizing it as a divine provision. By asking for beneficial rain, we align our intentions with Allah's plan for sustenance and growth. This practice cultivates gratitude and reliance on Allah (tawakkul), reminding us that even the elements are under His command and are sent for our benefit when we ask.

Source & Authentication

‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: If the wind blew strongly, the Prophet (ﷺ) would say: ‘O Allah, I ask You for its goodness, the goodness of what is in it, and the goodness of what it has been sent with; and I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of what is in it, and the evil of what it has been sent with.’ And if the sky became overcast with clouds, he would give up sitting and would say: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of it.’ If it rained, he would say: ‘O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.’ And ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw him when the sky was overcast, and the wind and rain began to blow and fall, and he would say: ‘O Allah, make it a beneficial rain.’ [Sahih Muslim 899, also found in Sahih al-Bukhari 6306 regarding beneficial rain]
