Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 1926

O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds and abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor. I ask You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test Your creation with a trial, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to that trial. I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which bring me closer to Your love.

Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'lal khayrat, wa tarkal munkarat, wa hubbal masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta fi khalqika fitnatan, fa tawaffani ilayka ghayra maftun. Wa as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribu ila hubbik.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a profound request for spiritual and practical guidance. It asks Allah to help us perform good deeds and avoid bad ones, a cornerstone of living a life pleasing to Him. Loving the poor (masakin) reflects compassion and humility, qualities highly valued in Islam. The request for forgiveness and mercy is a constant need for every believer. Most significantly, it includes a plea for protection from trials and tribulations ('fitnah'), asking to be taken by Allah before such tests become overwhelming. Finally, it seeks Allah's love, the love of those who love Him, and the love of actions that draw us closer to Him – a beautiful aspiration for ultimate success.

Source & Authentication

The hadith is narrated by 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: A man asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, 'What is the best thing to ask for?' He said, 'Ask Allah for 'afiyah (well-being, safety).' The man asked twice or thrice, and he ﷺ said to him each time, 'Ask Allah for 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said, 'O Allah, I ask You for 'afiyah in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for the pardon and well-being in my religion and my worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my faults and comfort me in my anxieties and protect me from my front and from my back, from my right and from my left, and from above me. I seek refuge in Your greatness from being struck down from beneath me.' The Prophet ﷺ then said, 'O Allah, I ask You for the means to do good deeds and to abandon evil deeds, and to love the poor, and for You to forgive me and have mercy on me. And when You intend to test Your creation with a trial, take me to Yourself without subjecting me to that trial. And I ask You for Your love, and the love of those who love You, and the love of deeds which draw me closer to Your love.' (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1926 - This is the portion related to the current dua)
