Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 7390

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the oppression of men.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhli, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijali.

When to Read

This powerful dua is particularly relevant when we are grappling with feelings of overwhelming sadness, anxiety, or a sense of helplessness. It's a dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite, especially when facing difficulties and emotional turmoil, like the immense grief that comes with personal loss. Recite it in the morning and evening, as is the Sunnah, to fortify your heart and mind against the pains that life can bring.

How to Read

The Prophet ﷺ would say this dua regularly, making it a part of his daily remembrance. It's best to recite it after the obligatory prayers or during the times of morning and evening remembrance (Adhkar). Raise your hands slightly as you supplicate, focusing on the meaning of each phrase and the sincerity of your plea to Allah. Remember that sincerity and conviction in Allah's power to alleviate suffering are key.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua directly addresses the deepest emotional and psychological burdens we can face. By seeking refuge in Allah from distress (hamm) and sorrow (hazan), we acknowledge His ultimate control over our feelings and ask for His divine comfort. It also protects us from the paralyzing effects of incapacity ('ajz) and laziness (kasal), empowering us to act with determination. Furthermore, it shields us from fear (jubn) and miserliness (buhl), promoting courage and generosity. Finally, seeking refuge from overwhelming debt (ghalabatud-dayn) and the dominance of others (qahrur-rijal) is a comprehensive plea for freedom and dignity, allowing us to live with peace of mind and honor.
