O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my private parts.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.
When to Read
This profound dua, sought by the Prophet ﷺ himself, is a plea for comprehensive protection from the potential for sin inherent in our senses and faculties. While not tied to a specific time, it is highly recommended for daily recitation, especially in the morning and evening *adhkar*, or whenever you feel the need to reinforce your spiritual defenses. It's particularly poignant when reflecting on moments you might have misused your tongue, eyes, or other limbs, or when you feel tempted to do so.
How to Read
Recite this dua with a deep sense of humility and awareness of the immense responsibility that comes with our God-given faculties. As you utter each part – 'from the evil of my hearing,' 'from the evil of my sight,' 'from the evil of my tongue' – pause to reflect on how easily these can lead us astray if not guarded. Ask Allah sincerely to purify these limbs and guide them towards what pleases Him. Your heart should be present, recognizing that seeking refuge in Allah is the only true shield against inner and outer evils.
Virtues & Benefits
The tongue, along with our other senses and limbs, is a powerful tool capable of immense good or profound harm. The Prophet ﷺ warned us about safeguarding them, even linking them to our entry into Jannah. By reciting this dua, you are: * **Following the Sunnah:** Emulating the Prophet's ﷺ own practice of seeking protection for his faculties. * **Seeking Comprehensive Protection:** This dua isn't just about the tongue; it's a holistic request for Allah's safeguard over your hearing, sight, heart, and private parts – all major gateways to sin. * **Purifying Your Character:** Actively seeking refuge from the 'evil' of these limbs helps us to be more mindful of our words, glances, thoughts, and actions, steering us away from backbiting, gossip, lustful gazes, evil intentions, and illicit acts. * **Attaining Spiritual Peace:** Knowing you have asked Allah, the All-Protector, to shield you from the misuse of your own being brings a deep sense of peace and reassurance. This dua reminds us that our bodies are trusts from Allah, and we must strive to use them only in ways that earn His pleasure, not His wrath.

It was narrated from Zaid bin Arqam (ra) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'O Allah, make me love faith and adorn it in my heart, and make disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience hateful to me, and make me among the rightly guided. O Allah, make me die as a Muslim, make me live as a Muslim. O Allah, protect me from the evils of my hearing, my sight, my tongue, my heart, and my private parts.'
