Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1550

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my seminal fluid.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi.

When to Read

This profound dua is for all times, but especially beneficial during times of temptation or when feeling spiritually distant. It's a powerful supplication to recite when waking up, before commencing the day's activities, or whenever one reflects on the potential for their senses and heart to lead them astray. It can be incorporated into your regular personal supplications (wird) for consistent spiritual protection.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, truly feeling the need for Allah's protection. Raise your hands in supplication as you would for other duas, and focus on the meaning of each phrase. Understand that 'evil of my hearing' refers to hearing that which displeases Allah, 'evil of my sight' to looking at what is forbidden, 'evil of my tongue' to backbiting, slander, or falsehood, 'evil of my heart' to harboring ill-will, envy, or disbelief, and 'evil of my seminal fluid' to unlawful sexual desires or emissions. Reflect on each sense and organ as you mention it, asking Allah to guard it.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates comprehensive protection by seeking refuge for our primary means of interacting with the world and our inner selves. By asking protection for our hearing, sight, tongue, and heart, we are seeking to align our outward actions and inward intentions with Allah's pleasure. It helps purify our intentions and actions, guarding against sins that often originate from these faculties. It fosters a state of constant awareness (muraqabah) of Allah's presence and our reliance on His guidance and protection from all forms of spiritual and moral decay.

The narrator said: I heard Al-Hasan bin 'Ali say: 'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us these words as he taught us a Surah of the Qur'an: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my seminal fluid."'
