Sahih HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5087

In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Bismillahilladhi la yaduru ma'asmihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Samee'ul-Aleem.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recommended to be recited in the morning and evening. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to say it upon waking and before sleeping, and also when beginning any new endeavor. It's a shield against all forms of harm, whether they be immediate or potential, seen or unseen, that may befall us during the day or the night.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and firm conviction in Allah's power. Understand that by invoking Allah's name, you are placing your trust in Him alone as your protector. It is best recited three times in the morning and three times in the evening for maximum benefit, as is the Sunnah for seeking refuge.

Virtues & Benefits

The Prophet ﷺ promised that whoever recites this dua three times in the morning will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until the evening, and whoever recites it three times in the evening will not be afflicted by any sudden calamity until the morning. This protection extends to dangers both on earth and in the heavens, encompassing all forms of harm. It is a profound expression of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) and a practical way to invoke His safeguarding.

Narrated by Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'There is no servant who says in the morning of every day and the evening of every night: 'Bismillahilladhi la yaduru ma'asmihi shai'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Samee'ul-Aleem' (In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in the heavens can cause harm, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing) - three times - except that nothing will harm him.'
