The Prophet's ﷺ Dua for Seeking Refuge from Arrogance and Pride

Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2739

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the destruction of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. And I seek refuge in You from the hardships of tribulation, the attainment of wretchedness, the evil of destiny, and the rejoicing of enemies.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala'i, wa darak-ish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'i.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, especially during your daily supplications (dua). It's particularly poignant when you feel overwhelmed by life's difficulties or are consciously seeking to purify your heart from negative traits. Recite it when you notice the slightest inclination towards arrogance or when facing challenging circumstances that might test your patience and humility.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. Imagine yourself earnestly asking Allah for protection. It's best recited with hands raised, as is the Sunnah when making dua, and with conviction in Allah's power to protect you. Make it a regular part of your morning and evening remembrance (dhikr) and before ending your prayers.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield against various forms of hardship and spiritual decay. By seeking refuge from the 'destruction of Your blessings' and 'reversal of Your well-being,' we acknowledge our complete dependence on Allah. The plea against 'arrogance' (implicitly covered by seeking refuge from all displeasures of Allah, which pride stems from) and 'hardships' protects us from spiritual pride that can lead to destruction. It encompasses seeking protection from both external calamities and internal spiritual diseases.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, saying: > Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa faja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik, wa a'udhu bika min jahdil-bala'i, wa darak-ish-shaqa'i, wa su'il-qada'i, wa shamatatil-a'da'i. (Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the destruction of Your blessings, the reversal of Your well-being, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that displeases You. And I seek refuge in You from the hardships of tribulation, the attainment of wretchedness, the evil of destiny, and the rejoicing of enemies.) — Sahih Muslim 2739
