اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى وَالْعِفَّةَ.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, richness, and contentment.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina wal-'iffah.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua can be recited at any time, especially during the quiet moments of the night or after prayers. It's particularly beneficial when one feels the urge to speak ill of others, engage in gossip, or when experiencing strong desires that could lead to sin. Making it a habit can help strengthen one's resolve against the temptations associated with the tongue and unchecked desires.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, focusing on each word and its meaning. It's best to raise your hands as you would during supplication, though this is not a strict requirement for all duas. Utter the words clearly and with a humble heart, seeking Allah's assistance. Repeating it multiple times can further solidify its impact on your intentions and actions.

Virtues & Benefits

This beautiful dua encapsulates seeking protection from two major areas of trial: the tongue and the stomach (representing desires and physical urges). By asking for guidance and piety, we align ourselves with Allah's will. 'Afaf (chastity) and 'iffah (contentment/chastity) protect us from unlawful acts and desires. Ghina (richness/contentment) shields us from the greed and envy that often stem from an unsatisfied stomach or unbridled tongue. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself made this dua, indicating its profound importance in maintaining spiritual and moral well-being.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from `Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina wal-'iffah.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, richness, and contentment).
