Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1554

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my private parts.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyi

When to Read

This dua is profound and beneficial to recite regularly, especially in the morning and evening. It's a comprehensive plea for protection against the misuse of our faculties – our senses, our speech, our intentions, and our physical desires. We often think about protecting ourselves from external harm, but the Prophet ﷺ taught us to be just as vigilant about guarding against the internal harms we can inflict upon ourselves and others.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep understanding of its meaning. Focus on each part of the plea: seeking refuge from the harms of what you hear, what you see, what you say, the thoughts and intentions of your heart, and any inappropriate desires or actions related to your private parts. Imagine each word as a shield being raised against potential transgressions.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encompasses a holistic approach to seeking protection. By asking Allah to safeguard our hearing, we are asking to be protected from listening to backbiting, slander, or anything displeasing to Allah. Protecting our sight means not looking at what is forbidden. Safeguarding our tongue is crucial, as it can build or destroy, spread truth or falsehood, and cause immense hurt. Protecting our heart means shielding it from envy, hatred, and doubt. Finally, seeking refuge concerning our 'maniyyi' (often translated as 'manhood' or 'private parts') refers to protecting ourselves from illicit sexual desires and actions. It's a comprehensive invocation for spiritual and moral well-being.

Narrated Abdullah bin Mas'ud: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to supplicate: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' Another narrator said: '...and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my private parts.'
