The Prophet's ﷺ Dua for Protection from the Temptations of Wealth and Poverty

Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency (contentment/freedom from need).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly during the supplications after prayers (Salat). It's a request for a balanced life, seeking divine help to navigate both periods of abundance and scarcity with integrity and faith.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincere intention and conviction, raising your hands as is customary when making dua. Focus on the meaning of each word and the profound request you are making from Allah. Believe that He will grant you what is best for you, whether it is guidance, protection, or contentment.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a deep understanding of the human condition and the potential pitfalls associated with both extremes of financial status. Seeking 'al-huda' (guidance) ensures we stay on the right path, while 'at-tuqa' (piety) strengthens our relationship with Allah. 'Al-'afaf' (chastity/abstinence from begging) protects our dignity and reliance on Allah, and 'al-ghina' (self-sufficiency/contentment) shields us from the greed that wealth can bring and the despair that poverty can induce. By asking for all four, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek a state of inner peace and reliance on Allah, regardless of external circumstances.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from 'Abdullah that the Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.' (O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency).
