Prophetic Duas
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2721

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and richness (contentment).

Allahumma inni as'alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-'afafa wal-ghina.

When to Read

This is a comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, particularly during the times when duas are more readily accepted, such as after obligatory prayers, during the night, or on Fridays. It's especially beneficial when reflecting on one's financial situation, seeking balance, and asking Allah to protect us from the potential harms of both extreme poverty and excessive wealth.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands as is customary when making dua. Focus on the meaning of each word and truly ask Allah to bestow these qualities upon you. It's recommended to repeat it, perhaps after your prayers or as part of your daily remembrance (dhikr).

Virtues & Benefits

This dua seeks four fundamental blessings that lead to a balanced and fulfilling life. * **Guidance (الهدى - Al-Huda):** The clarity to distinguish right from wrong and the ability to follow the straight path. * **Piety (التقى - At-Tuqa):** Awareness of Allah and the commitment to obey Him and avoid His prohibitions. This guards against falling into sin, whether driven by desperation in poverty or arrogance in wealth. * **Chastity/Self-Sufficiency (العفاف - Al-'Afaf):** This encompasses modesty, refraining from begging others, and maintaining dignity. It protects one from the shame and dependence that can accompany poverty, and from the arrogance and extravagance that can accompany wealth. * **Richness/Contentment (الغنى - Al-Ghina):** This isn't solely about material wealth, but more importantly, about inner richness and contentment with what Allah has provided. This contentment is the true wealth that shields us from the anxieties of poverty and the corrupting influences of excessive, ill-gotten, or ungrateful wealth.
