O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazani, wa a'udhu bika minal-'ajzi wal-kasali, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijal.
When to Read
This is a powerful dua for anyone feeling overwhelmed by persistent sadness, anxiety about the future, or a general sense of being weighed down. It's particularly relevant when facing situations that bring about worry (hamm) or deep sorrow (hazan), whether they are personal, financial, or related to health. The Prophet ﷺ would often recite this upon waking, making it a beautiful way to start the day with a conscious seeking of Allah's protection against these emotional and practical burdens.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart. Raise your hands, as is the custom when making supplication, and focus on the meaning of each phrase. Acknowledge your reliance on Allah (SWT) for relief from all forms of distress. It is recommended to say this upon waking in the morning, as the Prophet ﷺ did, to begin your day under Allah's protection. You can also recite it whenever you feel these emotions creeping in.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua offers comprehensive spiritual and emotional protection. By seeking refuge in Allah, we acknowledge His power over all matters and entrust our well-being to Him. The dua directly addresses: * **Emotional Well-being:** Protection from 'hamm' (worry, anxiety about the future) and 'hazan' (grief, sadness over past events). * **Personal Strength:** Refuge from 'ajz' (incapacity, weakness) and 'kasal' (laziness, lethargy), which can prevent us from fulfilling our duties and achieving our goals. * **Character Fortitude:** Seeking protection from 'jubn' (cowardice) and 'bukhl' (stinginess), two traits that can lead to regret and hinder our spiritual growth. * **Freedom from Burdens:** Seeking escape from 'ghalabat ad-dayn' (being overwhelmed by debt) and 'qahr ar-rijal' (the domination or overpowering by people), which can rob one of dignity and peace.
