O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, from the evil of my sight, from the evil of my tongue, from the evil of my heart, and from the evil of my semen.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min sharri sam'i wa min sharri basari wa min sharri lisani wa min sharri qalbi wa min sharri maniyyi
When to Read
This is a powerful dua to recite daily, especially in the morning and evening. It's particularly relevant when one feels their actions or thoughts might be straying from sincerity, or when facing temptations that could lead to inner corruption.
How to Read
Recite this dua with full presence and sincere intention. Raise your hands in supplication if possible, as is the sunnah. Reflect on each part of the dua: seeking protection for your senses (hearing and sight), your speech (tongue), your inner intentions (heart), and your physical desires (semen, which relates to purity and progeny). Make sure you are in a state of purity if reciting after or before prayer.
Virtues & Benefits
This comprehensive dua protects the believer from the hidden evils that can plague one's life. By seeking refuge in Allah from the 'evil of the heart,' we are asking for protection against hypocrisy, doubt, arrogance, and other spiritual ailments. Guarding the tongue prevents backbiting, lying, and idle chatter. Protecting our sight and hearing ensures these faculties are not used for sin. Seeking refuge concerning 'maniyyi' (semen) encompasses protection from illicit desires and actions that stem from them, thus safeguarding one's honor and lineage.
Source & Authentication
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah in his prayers saying: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from committing sin and from being in debt.' A man said to him: 'O Allah's Messenger, how frequent (debt) is he oppressed by it?' He said: 'A man, when he becomes in debt, tells lies and then breaks his promise.' He (also) said: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my sight, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my tongue, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my heart, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of my semen.' (i.e. sexual discharge).
