O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And I seek refuge in You from the trial of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of wealth, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of poverty, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal. O Allah, cleanse my heart with water, snow, and hail. Purify my heart from sins as You purified the white garment from dirt. And distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East and the West.
When to Read
This is a comprehensive dua the Prophet ﷺ would often recite, especially after the Tashahhud in prayer. It's beneficial to make this dua regularly, particularly when you feel a need for spiritual cleansing, protection from trials, or when reflecting on your inner state. The specific mention of seeking refuge from the 'trial of wealth' and 'trial of poverty' also makes it suitable during times of financial change or when considering your relationship with worldly possessions.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity and a humble heart. It's traditionally recited after the Tashahhud in prayer, before the final Tasleem, as the Prophet ﷺ instructed. When reciting outside of prayer, ensure you are in a state of purity and facing the Qiblah if possible. Focus on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, truly seeking Allah's protection and purification.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua is a powerful shield against numerous dangers, both external and internal. It encompasses seeking refuge from the loss of divine favors, the reversal of well-being, sudden calamities, and Allah's anger. It also specifically asks for protection from the intense trials of the grave and the deceptive temptations of wealth and poverty, and the ultimate trial of the Dajjal. The request for the heart to be cleansed and purified like a white garment signifies a desire for inner purity, free from the stain of sins, and the plea to distance sins like the East from the West highlights the aspiration for complete spiritual remoteness from wrongdoing. This helps guard against inner arrogance and conceit by acknowledging our constant need for Allah's mercy and guidance.

Narrated Abdullah: We used to say our prayer and ask Allah for three things, and the Prophet ﷺ used to ask Allah for thirteen things. Abdullah narrated that Allah's Messenger ﷺ taught them a comprehensive dua in Tashahhud: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi Jahannam, wa min 'adhib al-qabr, wa min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat, wa min sharri fitnatil-masih ad-Dajjal.' (The narrator also mentioned other supplications: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hell, and from the torment of the grave, and from the trial of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the Masih ad-Dajjal.) And in another narration: 'Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-ghina, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-faqr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-Dajjal. Allahumma ighsil qalbii bil-maa'i wath-thalji wal-barad, wa naqqi qalbii minal-khataaya kama naqqayta-th-thawba-l-abyada minad-danas, wa baa'id bainii wa baina khataayaaya kama baa'adta baina-l-mashriqi wal-maghrib.' (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. And distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East and the West.)
