O Allah, make light in my heart, and light in my sight, and light in my hearing, and light on my right, and light on my left, and light above me, and light below me, and light before me, and light behind me, and make light in my soul, and make for me light, and make me light.
Allahumma-j'al fi qalbi nooran, wa fi basari nooran, wa fi sam'i nooran, wa 'an yameeni nooran, wa 'an yasari nooran, wa fawqi nooran, wa tahti nooran, wa amami nooran, wa khalfi nooran, wa-j'al fi nafsi nooran, wa 'adhdhim li nooran, wa-j'al li nooran, wa-j'alni nooran.
When to Read
This is a powerful comprehensive dua that can be recited at any time, but it's particularly fitting during the blessed nights like those in Ramadan, or during the last third of the night when supplications are more readily accepted. It's also excellent to say after salah, or when you feel a need for clarity and direction in your life.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincere intention and concentration, visualizing the light filling your being. Raise your hands as you would for other duas, making heartfelt supplication. The Prophet ﷺ taught us the importance of asking Allah directly for what we need, and this dua covers numerous aspects of our lives, seeking divine illumination for them all.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encompasses seeking guidance and clarity in every aspect of one's life. The repeated emphasis on 'light' (noor) signifies seeking divine insight, wisdom, protection, and the ability to discern right from wrong. It's a request for Allah to illuminate our path, protect us from darkness and misguidance, and to make us beacons of light ourselves, reflecting His guidance in our actions and character.
Source & Authentication
Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to teach them this Du'a in the same way as he used to teach them a Surah from the Qur'an. He said: 'A person should say: O Allah, help me against myself, grant me steadfastness, and make me self-sufficient, and make me truthful, and make me sound in heart, and make me wise, and make me among the righteous. O Allah, grant me nobility in this world and in the Hereafter, and save me from disgrace and the punishment of the Fire. O Allah, grant me the ability to be grateful to You, to remember You, to worship You properly, and grant me sincerity and eloquence. O Allah, inspire me to follow guidance, make me zealous for it, and make me contented with it, and make me follow it, and make me prosperous through it, and make me succeed in it, and protect me from that which is contrary to it. O Allah, make for me light in my heart, and light in my hearing, and light in my sight, and light in my tongue, and light in my face, and light in my body, and light in my hands, and light in my feet, and light before me, and light behind me, and light on my right, and light on my left, and light above me, and light below me. O Allah, increase me in light, and grant me light, and make me light.' [Sahih Muslim 763, narrated by Abdullah ibn Abbas]
