Prophetic Duas
Hasan HadithSunan Abu Dawood 1542

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from poverty, from scarcity, and from humiliation. And I seek refuge in You from wronging others or being wronged.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-faqr wal-qillati wadh-dhillati, wa a'udhu bika an azlima aw uzlama.

When to Read

This dua is particularly relevant when one feels the stirrings of discontent due to financial struggles, or when facing situations that could lead to wrongdoing. It's a comprehensive prayer for protection against internal struggles (like greed that stems from fear of poverty) and external injustices. It can be recited regularly as part of one's morning and evening supplications, or in times of specific need.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, raising your hands slightly as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to do when making supplication. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the plea for protection from both lack and the temptation of acquiring wealth through unjust means. Remember that sincerity in dua is key.

Virtues & Benefits

This prayer offers a profound shield against greed by addressing its root causes: the fear of poverty and the desire for status. By seeking refuge in Allah from poverty (الفَقْرِ) and scarcity (الْقِلَّةِ), one acknowledges that true sustenance and provision come from Allah alone, lessening the impulse to hoard or acquire wealth desperately. Seeking refuge from humiliation (الذِّلَّةِ) further removes the motivation to gain wealth for the sake of worldly prestige. Most importantly, seeking protection from wronging others (أَنْ أَظْلِمَ) or being wronged (أَوْ أُظْلَمَ) directly counters the unethical practices greed often leads to. This dua helps foster contentment and justice in one's dealings.
