I seek refuge for you with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye. Then he says: Allah has spoken the truth and conveyed His message. Then he says: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. Then he sends blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and supplicates for whatever he wishes.
U'eedhuka bikalimaatillahit-taammati min kulli shaytanin wa haammah, wa min kulli 'aynin laammah. Thumma yaqool: Sadaqallaahu wa ballagha lisaalatahu. Thumma yaqool: A'oodhu billaahi minash-shaytaanir-rajeem. Thumma yusalli 'alan-Nabiyyi ﷺ wa yad'oo bimaa shaa'.
When to Read
This beautiful supplication is recommended to be recited when a newborn child first utters a sound, or when they begin to speak, especially if their first words are an invocation of Allah's name. It's a way for parents and guardians to begin their child's life with remembrance and protection.
How to Read
This is recited by the parent or guardian over the child. It is ideal to say it with sincerity and focus, envisioning Allah's protection enveloping the child. The practice involves reciting the specific supplication, followed by the affirmations of Allah's truth and seeking refuge from Shaytan, and finally sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and making personal duas. It's a holistic approach to invoking divine care.
Virtues & Benefits
Reciting this dua is a way to invoke Allah's protection for the newborn from all forms of harm, both physical (like the evil eye and poisonous creatures) and spiritual (like the devil). It's a beautiful way to instill the remembrance of Allah from the very beginning of a child's life, sanctifying their first utterances and setting a righteous foundation for their future. It also follows the prophetic practice of seeking refuge and sending blessings.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that the Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge for you with the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (meaning Ibrahim) used to seek refuge with Allah for Ismail and Ishaq with this invocation.' Then he said: 'I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan. Then he sent blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ and supplicated for whatever he wished.'
