I seek protection for you with the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous thing, and from every envious eye.
U'idhu-ka bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammating
When to Read
This dua is recited when a newborn is born, particularly as they are being bathed for the first time after birth, or at any point when seeking Allah's protection for the child. It's a beautiful way to begin their journey in this world with a supplication for their safety and purity.
How to Read
Recite this dua clearly and with sincere intention, directing it towards the newborn. It can be whispered near their ear or spoken while holding them. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible, though the sincerity of the heart is paramount.
Virtues & Benefits
This supplication invokes Allah's complete protection for the child against unseen evils, such as the whisperings of Shaytan, harmful creatures, and the evil eye. It's a manifestation of a parent's deep desire to shield their offspring with the ultimate shield: the words of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used this dua to seek protection for his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them), highlighting its profound significance.
Source & Authentication
It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge in Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: > أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ، وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ > > *'U'idhu-kumaa bikalimatillahit-tammati min kulli shaytanin wa hammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin lammating.'* > > Then he would say: > > "Verily your father (Abraham) sought refuge in Allah with these selfsame words for Ishmael and Isaac (peace be upon them)." (Sahih al-Bukhari 3308)
