Pregnancy & Newborn
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim 3308 (Bukhari), 2137 (Muslim)

I seek refuge for you in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye. O Allah, make him pious and rightly guided, and make him among Your righteous servants.

U'ee-dhuka bikalimaatillahit-tammati min kulli shay-taanin wa haammatin, wa min kulli 'aynin laammatin. Allahumma-j'alhu taqiyyan rasheedan, waj'alhu min 'ibaadikas-saaliheen.

When to Read

This dua is particularly recommended to be recited for a newborn baby, right after birth. It can also be recited by parents or guardians for the protection and righteous upbringing of their children at any time, especially when there is a concern for their well-being or spiritual state.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and deep contemplation. It is best to place your hand on the child while reciting. Focus on the meaning of seeking Allah's protection and His guidance for the child's spiritual development. Repeat it regularly as a form of consistent supplication and remembrance.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua invokes Allah's comprehensive protection for the child against all forms of spiritual and physical harm, including the whispers of Shaytan and the evil eye. It also serves as a prayer for the child to grow into a God-conscious and upright individual, contributing to the righteousness of the community. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself used this dua for his grandsons, Hasan and Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them).

Source & Authentication

Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge in Allah's perfect words from every devil and every animal which is harmful, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (Ibrahim) used to seek refuge in Allah for Isma'il and Ishaq with the like of this.' (Sahih al-Bukhari 3308, Sahih Muslim 2137). Another narration in Sahih Muslim (2137) mentions the Prophet ﷺ saying: 'The refuge sought by Allah's words is to protect from the newborn's harm.' And upon reciting it, the Prophet ﷺ would say to the child's mother: 'I commend to Allah your offspring and your sustenance.'
