Pregnancy & Newborn
Sahih HadithSunan Ibn Majah 1807

بَارَكَ اللهُ لَكَ فِي المَوْلُودِ، وَشَكَرَ الوَاهِبَ، وَبَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ، وَرُزِقْتَ بِرَّهُ.

May Allah bless you in your newborn, may the Giver be thanked, may he reach the age of maturity, and may you be granted his righteousness.

Barakallahu laka fil mawloodi, wa shakara al-waahiba, wa balagha ashuddahu, wa ruziqta birrahu.

When to Read

This beautiful supplication is for the parents and family of a newborn. It is recited when someone congratulates them on the birth of their child. While there isn't a specific dua solely for a baby's first smile or recognizing parents, this general dua for the newborn encompasses blessings for their growth and righteousness, which naturally includes these precious milestones.

How to Read

This dua is typically recited by others to the parents upon seeing the newborn. However, parents can also recite this with the intention of seeking Allah's blessings for their child as they grow and develop. It's recommended to recite it with sincerity and heartfelt hope. Holding the baby gently while reciting can enhance the feeling of connection and devotion.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates profound well-wishes for the child and the family. It asks Allah to bestow His blessings on the newborn, leading to their healthy growth and spiritual maturity. It also encourages gratitude towards Allah for the gift of a child and seeks that the child will be a source of comfort and righteousness for their parents. Witnessing a baby's first smile or signs of recognition is a deeply emotional moment, and this dua serves as a reminder to attribute such joys to Allah and to pray for the child's continued development in all aspects.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when a child was born, he would be brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he would ask for a name. Then he would say: 'May Allah bless you in your newborn, may the Giver be thanked, may he reach the age of maturity, and may you be granted his righteousness.' (Sunan Ibn Majah, Book 6, Hadith 1807)

Dua for a Newborn's Healthy Eyesight and Vision

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the helplessness of old age. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and the evil of the trials of wealth, and the evil of the trials of poverty, and the evil of the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You have kept far the East and the West. O Allah, forgive me my mistake, and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and whatever You know better of me. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistake and my deliberate (sin), and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and whatever You know better of me. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is none worthy of worship but You.
