Pregnancy & Newborn
Sahih HadithSahih al-Bukhari 5714

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تُرْبَةُ أَرْضِنَا، بِرِيقِ بَعْضِنَا، يُشْفَى سَقِيمُنَا، بِإِذْنِ رَبِّنَا.

In the name of Allah, the soil of our land, mixed with the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord.

Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, yushfa saqeemunā, bi-idni rabbina.

When to Read

This dua is recited by parents or caregivers when a newborn is experiencing discomfort, pain, or specifically when suffering from colic. It can be recited gently onto the baby's forehead or hands, or whispered near them, seeking Allah's healing and comfort for the little one. It's a prayer for relief from the crying and distress associated with infantile colic.

How to Read

With sincere intention and trust in Allah (Tawakkul). Place your hand gently on your baby's forehead or chest, or cup your hands near them. Recite the dua clearly and with heartfelt supplication. It's also beneficial to combine this with making wudu, facing the Qiblah if possible, and seeking Allah's mercy. Remember that the intention and the connection with Allah are paramount.

Virtues & Benefits

This practice stems from the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ method of seeking healing for the sick. It highlights the principle that even seemingly simple elements of creation, when combined with Allah's permission and our supplication, can be a means of cure. Reciting this dua reaffirms our reliance on Allah as the ultimate Healer and brings comfort to both the baby and the parents through the act of earnest prayer.

Source & Authentication

The narration describes how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite this dua for those who were sick, by taking the soil of his land and mixing it with his saliva, then saying: 'Bismillahi, turbatu ardina, biriqi ba'dina, yushfa saqeemunā, bi-idni rabbina.' (In the name of Allah, the soil of our land, mixed with the saliva of some of us, our sick will be healed by the permission of our Lord.) This was a method of seeking a cure, acknowledging that all healing comes from Allah. Sahih al-Bukhari 5714.
