Dua for a Crying Baby: Seeking Peace and Relief

Pregnancy & Newborn
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2709

I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of devils and from their presence.

A'udhu bikalimatillahit-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi, wa min sharri 'ibadihi, wa min hamazatis-shayateeni wa an yahdhurun.

When to Read

This powerful dua is incredibly beneficial when a baby is experiencing intense crying fits and you feel helpless. It's a reminder to turn to Allah when worldly means seem insufficient. Recite it with sincere conviction whenever your little one is distressed and you seek peace for them and relief for yourself.

How to Read

As your baby cries, hold them gently. Place your hand on their chest or head, if they allow it. Recite the dua aloud with a soft, calming voice, focusing on the meaning and the refuge you are seeking from Allah. Take deep breaths and try to remain calm yourself, as your state can affect your baby. Repeat it as needed, with sincere supplication.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua seeks protection from various evils – Allah's displeasure, His punishment, the general evil of creation, and the specific insidious influence of Shaytan. When recited for a child, it embodies the parent's deep desire for their protection and well-being. It also serves as a spiritual anchor for the parent, reminding us that ultimate control and relief come only from Allah, strengthening our reliance (tawakkul) on Him during challenging times.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: 'Seek refuge with Allah by reciting the words of my father Ibrahim (peace be upon him): 'My Lord! They have indeed led astray many of mankind. So, whoever follows me, he is of me. And whoever disobeys me, then You are indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.' (14:36) And: 'O my Lord! I have made my dwelling in a barren valley in the sacred House (that is Mecca) in order that they may establish the prayer. So, fill the hearts of some people with love towards them, and (O Allah) provide them with fruits, so that they may give thanks.' (14:37) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also used to seek refuge (with Allah) for Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) saying: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (meaning Ibrahim) used to seek refuge with Allah for his sons (Isma'il and Ishaq) with these words.' (Sahih Muslim 2709).
