Pregnancy & Newborn
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 2836

In the name of Allah, and by Allah, and upon the tradition of the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, make this [child] a blessing upon his heart and his intellect, and righteousness, and upon his mother and his father, and within himself, and in his character, and bless us concerning him.

When to Read

This dua is traditionally recited at the time of the Aqiqa sacrifice for a newborn, typically on the seventh, fourteenth, or twenty-first day after birth, when the animal is being sacrificed. It is offered with the intention of seeking Allah's blessings for the child and expressing gratitude for the newborn.

How to Read

The parent or guardian recites this dua with sincere intention and a humble heart while the Aqiqa animal is being prepared for sacrifice. It is recommended to be in a state of purity (Wudu) and face the Qiblah. The dua should be recited clearly, reflecting on the meaning of the words.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting this dua during the Aqiqa is a beautiful way to invoke Allah's blessings for the child's spiritual, intellectual, and moral development. It acknowledges the Aqiqa as an act of worship and a means of showing gratitude to Allah for the gift of a child. It seeks Allah's protection and guidance for the child and His blessings upon the entire family regarding this new life.

Source & Authentication

The hadith describes the Aqiqa tradition. While this specific wording isn't attributed as a direct prophetic supplication in the most stringent chains, it's a well-established formulation used by scholars and righteous individuals, drawing from the general supplications for children and blessings taught in the Sunnah. The practice of Aqiqa itself is a Sunnah, and supplication during such acts of worship is highly encouraged. Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: 'The Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded us to sacrifice two sheep for a boy and one sheep for a girl.' (Sunan Ibn Majah 3163, Sahih). The essence of seeking blessings for the child and thanking Allah is central to this practice.
