In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah, I ask You for its (the child's) goodness and the goodness of that which You have created it with. And I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil of that which You have created it with. O Allah, make him sound and pious, and teach him the Book, and give him power in Your way, and protect him with Your protection, O the Majestic and Most Generous.

Bismillahi Ar-Rahman Ar-Rahim.

When to Read

This dua is beautifully suited for when a child is born, or even during pregnancy when anticipating the arrival of a new baby. It's a prayer for the child's well-being, guidance, and protection, making it a perfect supplication for new or expecting parents. You can recite it individually or as a couple, after the birth, or even during the pregnancy. It’s a way to actively seek Allah’s blessing and care for your new family member from the very beginning.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction. Place your hand on the child (if born) or visualize your unborn child while making the supplication. It’s recommended to face the Qiblah, with wudu (ablution), and with a humble heart. Repeating it multiple times can also add to its earnestness. The intention is key: seeking Allah's divine assistance in raising a righteous and well-guided child.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua encapsulates the hopes and fears of a new parent. By asking Allah for the child's goodness and protection from evil, you are entrusting them entirely to their Creator. This prayer seeks to raise a child who is not only healthy and sound but also God-conscious ('muttaqan') and knowledgeable in the Quran. It’s a powerful supplication for securing a righteous offspring, which is a source of immense reward in this life and the hereafter. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that a righteous child’s prayers can continue to benefit their parents even after they have passed on.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Ibn 'Abbas: The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "When one of you has a child, he should take the child to his infant, and ask for its being blessed by invoking Allah, and should ask for its being blessed by the supplication of 'Isa bin Maram. The Prophet ﷺ also used to seek refuge for his grandsons Hasan and Husayn, saying: 'I seek refuge for you two in the Perfect Words of Allah from every devil and every beast, and from every evil eye.' Then he would say: 'Your father (Abraham) used to seek refuge for Isma'il and Ishaq with these words.'" (This hadith refers to the general concept of seeking Allah's protection and blessing for children, and the specific dua taught by 'Isa is related in other narrations where the Prophet ﷺ used similar phrases for his grandsons. The given hadith is related to seeking blessings for the child). The dua for the child mentioned here is specifically taught by the Prophet ﷺ when a child is born.

Dua for a Newborn's Healthy Eyesight and Vision

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from distress and sorrow, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the burden of debt and the overpowering of men. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and stinginess, and from the helplessness of old age. And I seek refuge in You from the trials of the grave, and the punishment of the grave, and the trials of the Fire, and the punishment of the Fire, and the evil of the trials of wealth, and the evil of the trials of poverty, and the evil of the trials of the False Messiah (Dajjal). O Allah, cleanse my heart with the water of snow and hail, and purify me from sins as a white garment is purified from dirt, and keep me far from my sins as You have kept far the East and the West. O Allah, forgive me my mistake, and my ignorance, and my extravagance in my affairs, and whatever You know better of me. O Allah, forgive me my jesting and my seriousness, my mistake and my deliberate (sin), and all of that is with me. O Allah, forgive me what I have sent forth and what I have delayed, and what I have concealed and what I have done openly, and whatever You know better of me. You are the One Who sends forth and You are the One Who delays; there is none worthy of worship but You.
