Pregnancy & Newborn
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 3163

In the name of Allah, this is the 'Aqiqah for [name of newborn]. Blood for blood, flesh for flesh, bones for bones, skin for skin, and hair for hair. O Allah, make it a protection for [name of newborn] from the Fire.

Bismillahi, hadhihi 'aqeeqatu fulan (name of newborn), damun bidamin, wa lahmun bilahmin, wa 'idhamun bi'idhamin, wa jildun bijildin, wa sha'run bisha'rin, Allahumma ij'alha jaza'an lifulan minan-nar.

When to Read

This supplication is recited at the time of the 'Aqiqah sacrifice for a newborn, which is typically performed on the seventh, fourteenth, or twenty-first day after birth. It accompanies the shaving of the newborn's head.

How to Read

The head of the newborn is shaved after the 'Aqiqah sacrifice. The hair is then weighed, and its equivalent in silver is given away in charity. This dua is recited during the process or when presenting the sacrifice. It is recommended to share the meat with family, friends, and the poor.

Virtues & Benefits

The 'Aqiqah is a Sunnah practice performed to show gratitude to Allah for a newborn. It involves sacrificing one or two animals (sheep or goats) for a boy and one for a girl. This act of sacrifice and charity purifies the child and is a means of seeking Allah's protection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'Whoever has a child born to him, let him sacrifice two ram-like sheep for a boy and one for a girl.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 2863). The act of shaving the head and giving the hair's weight in silver in charity is also a Sunnah that brings blessings.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'For the boy, two sufficient sheep, and for the girl, one sheep.' [Sunan Abi Dawud 2863]. Another narration states: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) said: '... and shave his head.' (Sunan Abi Dawud 2867). Regarding the charity of the hair, it is narrated that when Al-Hasan ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with them) was born, the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'O daughter of my Messenger, shave his head and give charity of the weight of his hair in silver.' So, they shaved his head and gave charity in silver the weight of his hair.' (Reported by Al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman, and authenticated by Al-Albani in Irwa' al-Ghalil 1165, though the exact wording and narration chain may vary). This specific dua for the sacrifice is found in Ibn Majah.
