Dua for Steadfastness When Faced with Endless Criticism

Patience & Sabr
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2722

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your vengeance, and all Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from these.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuj'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minha.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is for those times when you feel overwhelmed by relentless criticism, whether it's unfair judgments, constant negativity, or situations where it feels like your efforts are never enough. Recite it when you feel your resolve weakening under pressure, or when the weight of others' opinions starts to chafe at your spirit. It's a shield against despair and a source of inner strength when the world seems determined to find fault.

How to Read

When you feel the sting of criticism or the weariness of constant disapproval, find a quiet moment. Raise your hands, as is customary for dua, and recite this supplication with sincerity. Focus on the meaning, asking Allah directly for protection not just from the external criticism, but from the internal effect it has – the loss of blessings, the weakening of well-being, and His displeasure. Repeat it throughout the day if needed, especially during challenging interactions.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound request for divine protection. By seeking refuge in Allah, you are asking Him to preserve the good in your life – your faith, your family, your achievements (ni'mah). You ask for His continued protection and well-being ('afiyah), so that external troubles don't break you down. Crucially, you ask to be shielded from sudden calamities or His anger (niqmah and sakhat), which can be a consequence of persistent wrongdoing or a lack of patience. Reciting this regularly fortifies your heart against the emotional toll of criticism, fostering resilience and steadfastness (sabr).

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to invoke Allah frequently, saying: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wa 'afiyatika fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfadni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi wa 'an yomini wa 'an shimati wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bika bighamatika an ughtala min tahti.' (O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and Your well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family and my wealth. O Allah, conceal my weaknesses and safeguard me from things that cause me fear. O Allah, guard me from my front and from my back, from my right and from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your magnificence from being smitten from beneath me.) This particular dua for seeking refuge from the cessation of blessings and change of well-being is part of a larger category of protection taught by the Prophet ﷺ. The tradition emphasizes seeking refuge in Allah's perfect words and attributes against all forms of evil and misfortune.
