Dua for Patience When Loved Ones Disappoint

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 5525

O Allah, I ask You for patience in the face of what I dislike, a life after death, relief at the time of Your wrath, ease after hardship, and pleasure after death. O Allah, I ask You for the pleasure of looking at Your Face, and longing to meet You, without any distress that harms or misguidance that leads astray. O Allah, adorn me with the adornment of faith, and make me a guide who is guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka sabran 'ala ma karihtu, wa 'ayshan ba'di, wa farajan 'inda ghadabika, wa rakha'an ba'da shiddatin, wa ladhdhatan ba'da mawtin. Allahumma as'aluka ladhdhatan-nazari ila wajhika, wash-shawqa ila liqa'ika, fi ghairi dharra'in mudirratin, wa la fitnatin mudillatin. Allahumma zayyini bizinatil-imani, waj'alni hadiyan mahdiyyan.

When to Read

This dua is particularly poignant when dealing with the sting of disappointment from those closest to us. Whether it's a parent, spouse, child, or dear friend whose actions or words leave us hurt, this prayer asks Allah for the inner fortitude to accept what He has decreed, find peace in His presence, and maintain our connection with Him even when human connections falter. Recite it in the quiet moments after an argument, a broken promise, or a misunderstanding that weighs on your heart.

How to Read

As with all duas, sincerity is key. Raise your hands, facing the Qiblah if possible, and pour your heart out to Allah. Utter the words with conviction, contemplating their meaning. Try to recite it with a clean heart and a firm belief that Allah is the ultimate source of strength and comfort. It can be recited once or repeated as needed, especially during moments of emotional turmoil. Remember to also reflect on your own shortcomings and make dua for forgiveness and guidance for yourself and those who have disappointed you.

Virtues & Benefits

This profound supplication seeks Allah's help in navigating life's inevitable challenges, especially those that arise from our relationships. It asks for patience not just in enduring hardship, but in accepting what we dislike, fostering a deeper submission to Allah's will. It also includes a beautiful plea for a contented afterlife and the ultimate pleasure of seeing Allah's Face, reminding us that our temporary worldly disappointments are fleeting in the grand scheme of things. By asking to be adorned with the 'adornment of faith' and to be a 'guide who is guided,' we are essentially asking Allah to transform our struggles into a source of strength, conviction, and positive influence for ourselves and others, reflecting the essence of *sabr*.
