Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me for my calamity and compensate me with something better than it.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Allahumma ajurni fi musibati, wakhlif li khayran minha.
When to Read
This is the most comforting dua to recite the moment you learn of or experience the loss of your beloved pet. The deep bond we form with our animal companions can make their passing a profound sorrow. Saying this immediately helps anchor your heart in faith and submission to Allah's decree during a difficult time.
How to Read
Recite this dua with sincerity, allowing its profound meaning to resonate within you. Acknowledge that everything belongs to Allah and to Him we will all return. Understand that you are seeking Allah's reward for your patience and His generous replacement for what you've lost. It's a verbal plea combined with an internal affirmation of Tawhid and acceptance.
Virtues & Benefits
The Prophet ﷺ taught that whoever says this dua when afflicted by a calamity will be rewarded by Allah for their suffering, and Allah will replace what they lost with something better. This 'better' replacement isn't necessarily another earthly pet, but could be peace of heart, spiritual strength, greater wisdom, or immense reward in the Hereafter. It transforms your sadness into an opportunity for divine mercy and recompense.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "There is no Muslim who is afflicted with a calamity and says what Allah has commanded him: 'Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me for my calamity and compensate me with something better than it,' but Allah will reward him for his calamity and compensate him with something better than it." She said: When Abu Salamah died, I said: "Which Muslim is better than Abu Salamah, whose family was the first to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" Then I said [the dua]. So Allah compensated me with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. — Sahih Muslim 918a
