Virtues & Benefits
This utterance is prescribed for any calamity, big or small. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'No Muslim is afflicted with worry or grief, and then says: "Our Lord, grant me patience" and 'Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return' (Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn), except that Allah will grant him patience.' It is also mentioned that whoever says this, Allah will grant them blessings and mercy, and it is these who are the rightly guided. (Al-Baqarah 2:157)

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: "There is no servant of Allah who is smitten with a calamity, but he says: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un' (We are unto Allah and unto Him we return); 'O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me the best in exchange for it' – except that Allah would give him the best in exchange for it." Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Abu Salamah died, I uttered these words as he commanded me to do, and Allah gave me the best in exchange for him (i.e. I married Allah's Messenger ﷺ).
