Dua for Patience When Dealing with Mistakes of Others

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan Ibn Majah 925

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This dua is a powerful supplication for seeking Allah's help in acquiring qualities that enable us to deal with the shortcomings of others. Recite it before or after a situation where you anticipate needing patience, or whenever you feel your temper being tested by someone's errors. It's particularly beneficial when starting your day or before embarking on tasks that involve interaction with people.

How to Read

Make this dua with sincere intention, focusing on your desire for Allah's assistance in improving your character and interactions. Raise your hands as you supplicate, a sign of humility and reliance on Allah. Speak clearly and with conviction, believing that Allah will answer your sincere plea.

Virtues & Benefits

While this specific dua is for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds, it indirectly cultivates the inner strength needed for patience. By seeking beneficial knowledge, we learn about Allah's commands and the virtues of patience (sabr). Good provision can reduce worldly anxieties that might otherwise fuel impatience. Acceptable deeds are the fruit of righteous conduct, which includes treating others with kindness and understanding, even when they err. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often make this dua in the morning, seeking Allah's blessings for the day ahead, which implicitly includes the challenges and interactions we will face.

Source & Authentication

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'The prayer of the servant is answered so long as he does not pray for sin or for the severing of the ties of kinship, and so long as he does not act impatiently.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what does it mean to act impatiently?' He said: 'Impatiently is the impatience of the tongue.' And `Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.' (O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and acceptable deeds.)' – Sunan Ibn Majah 925. While the hadith discusses impatience in general (impatience of the tongue), the Prophet's ﷺ supplication for beneficial deeds is a cornerstone of building good character, which includes patience with others.
