Dua for Patience During Trials: Seeking Allah's Strength

Patience & Sabr
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 2710

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, and the reversal of the good health You have granted, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that which incurs Your displeasure.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik

When to Read

This dua is profoundly beneficial when you feel overwhelmed by a test of faith, a hardship, or a situation that challenges your reliance on Allah. Recite it when you sense your patience waning, when you fear losing the good things Allah has blessed you with, or when you are facing a crisis that could lead to anger or discontentment with Allah's decree. It's a proactive supplication to safeguard your spiritual state during difficult times.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a deep sense of dependence on Allah. Raise your hands in supplication as the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us is a sign of humility and earnestness. Believe firmly that Allah is the only one who can protect you from trials and keep you steadfast. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase as you utter it, internalizing your plea for divine protection.

Virtues & Benefits

This supplication directly asks Allah for protection against the loss of His blessings, the decline of well-being, unexpected calamities, and His anger. By seeking refuge in Allah from these aspects, you are essentially asking for His continued favor, good health, protection from sudden misfortune, and the ability to remain pleased with His decree, all of which are crucial for maintaining patience (sabr) during trials. This helps to shift your focus from the hardship itself to seeking Allah’s aid, which is the true source of strength and resilience.

Source & Authentication

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to seek refuge in Allah from these four things in the following words: "Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuja'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik." (O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the cessation of Your blessings, and the reversal of the good health You have granted, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all that which incurs Your displeasure.) — Sahih Muslim 2710. (Note: While the hadith itself doesn't explicitly mention 'patience', the act of seeking refuge from these trials directly supports the believer's ability to remain patient and steadfast, as it asks for protection from the very things that can break one's resolve.)
