Dua for Patience and Strength When Facing the Unknown Future

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 5074

O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family, and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and calm my fears. O Allah, protect me from my front, from behind me, from my right, from my left, and from above me, and I seek refuge in Your magnificence from being attacked from beneath me.

Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yomini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.

When to Read

This dua is incredibly comprehensive and perfect for recitation at any time, especially when you feel a sense of unease about the future or when facing challenges where the outcome is uncertain. Reciting it in the morning and evening, as is the Sunnah for many protective duas, can bring a profound sense of peace and reliance on Allah (SWT).

How to Read

Begin with the intention of seeking Allah's protection and well-being. Recite it with sincerity and conviction, believing that Allah (SWT) is the ultimate protector and provider. Focus on the meaning of each phrase, reflecting on your dependence on Him for everything. It's a powerful supplication that should be made with a humble heart and a clear voice.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a request for comprehensive well-being ('afiyah), which includes protection from all harm, physical and spiritual, in both this life and the next. It asks for pardon ('afw), acknowledging our shortcomings, and 'afiyah in our deen, dunya, family, and wealth. The latter part of the dua is a powerful plea for protection from every conceivable direction, highlighting our vulnerability and Allah's omnipresent power. It fosters a mindset of Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) when the future is unknown, reminding us that true security comes only from Him.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate: 'Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyata fid-dunya wal-akhirah. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afwa wal-'afiyata fi dini wa dunyaya wa ahli wa mali. Allahumma-stur 'awrati wa amin raw'ati. Allahumma-hfazni min bayni yadayya wa min khalfi, wa 'an yomini wa 'an shimali, wa min fawqi, wa a'udhu bi 'azamatika an ughtala min tahti.' (Sahih).
