Dua for Patience and Strength When Facing the Loss of a Beloved Pet

Patience & Sabr
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

Verily, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma-jurni fī muṣībatī wa akhlifnī khayran minhā.

When to Read

This profound dua is for moments of deep loss and grief, such as the passing of a beloved pet. Recite it immediately upon hearing the news or when the overwhelming sadness strikes. It's a way to acknowledge Allah's decree, seek His comfort, and pray for solace and better provision in return for your patience.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heavy heart. Understand that the loss of a pet, for many of us, is a significant emotional event, and seeking Allah's reward for bearing this hardship is a beautiful act of faith. Utter it while reflecting on your return to Allah and your trust in His plan. Allow the words to flow from your heart, acknowledging that all is from Him and will return to Him.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a cornerstone for dealing with any affliction. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this specific wording to Ummu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) when she lost her husband Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him). Allah indeed compensated her with marriage to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. When recited with true faith during a loss, it is a means of gaining Allah's reward for your patience (sabr) and seeking His grace for a better outcome. It reminds us that even in our deepest sorrows, there is divine wisdom and the promise of Allah's compensation.

Source & Authentication

Ummu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as he was saying: "There is no Muslim who is smitten by a calamity and he remembers what Allah has ordained for him (i.e., for the person who is patient in the face of calamity) and says: 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma-jurni fī muṣībatī wa akhlifnī khayran minhā,' but Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, would make him (better) happen for him (i.e., grant him a better reward) than that for which he felt grief." Ummu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: When Abu Salamah died, I uttered these words as Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had commanded me, and Allah gave me (in his place) a better one than Abu Salamah (i.e., Allah's Messenger Muhammad ﷺ himself).
