Dua for Patience and Strength in the Face of Parental Loss

Patience & Sabr
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 918

Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return. O Allah, suffice me with Your lawful provision instead of Your unlawful, and enrich me with Your grace, so that I may not need to ask anyone other than You.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma-kfini biḥalālika 'an ḥarāmika, wa aghnini bifadlika 'amman siwāk.

When to Read

This dua is profoundly relevant when receiving news of a parent's passing, or at any point when the grief and weight of their absence feel overwhelming. It's a moment to acknowledge Allah's decree and seek His solace and provision.

How to Read

Utter these words with sincerity and heartfelt reflection. The first part, 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn,' is a profound statement of acceptance of Allah's will, a reminder that we and all we possess ultimately belong to Him, and will return to Him. The second part is a direct plea for Allah's sufficient provision, both in matters of sustenance and in finding strength and comfort through Him alone. It's best recited in the moments after hearing the news, or during times of intense sorrow.

Virtues & Benefits

Reciting 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn' is a Sunnah at the time of calamity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: 'When a servant of Allah is afflicted by calamity, he says: 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn' (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return). O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me something better in exchange for it.' Allah then rewards him for that and grants him something better in exchange for it.' (Sahih Muslim 918). This utterance is not just a statement but a form of remembrance and worship that invokes Allah's mercy and reward. The second part of the dua, seeking Allah's sufficient provision, is a powerful supplication for contentment and independence from creation, crucial when one might feel vulnerable and reliant.
