Dua for Patience and Strength: Enduring Spiritual Battles

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3503

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all affairs, and resolve in righteousness. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your blessings and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of whatever You know, and I ask You of the good that You know. I seek Your forgiveness for what You know, indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.

Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyoob.

When to Read

This powerful supplication is incredibly relevant during times when we feel tested, overwhelmed by whispers of doubt, or tempted by paths that lead away from Allah. Whether facing personal struggles, societal pressures, or internal spiritual battles against the *nafs* (lower self) and *Shaytan*, reciting this dua can bolster our resolve. It's a prayer for resilience when our faith is challenged and we need inner strength to remain firm on the straight path.

How to Read

Begin with sincere intention, turning your heart fully to Allah. It's best to raise your hands, as is the Sunnah when making dua. Start by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Recite this dua with concentration, focusing on the meaning of each word. Then, follow up with specific personal duas asking Allah for patience and strength in your particular trials. End with blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ again and wiping your hands over your face, if possible.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua encapsulates a comprehensive request for spiritual fortification. Asking for 'steadfastness in all affairs' and 'resolve in righteousness' directly addresses the need to remain firm despite difficulties. The request for 'gratitude' and 'best worship' reminds us that strength comes from appreciating Allah's favors and drawing closer to Him. Seeking a 'sound heart' and 'truthful tongue' purifies our inner and outer selves, making us less susceptible to spiritual decay. By seeking refuge from 'evil' and asking for 'good,' we acknowledge Allah's complete knowledge and power, placing our trust in Him to guide us away from harm and towards beneficial outcomes. It's a proactive prayer that prepares the believer for life's spiritual challenges.

Source & Authentication

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to his companions, he emphasized its comprehensive nature. The hadith states: 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us the Tashahhud and teach us the dua to make in our prayer: 'Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalbansaleeman, wa lisaanan saadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyoob.' (O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all affairs, and resolve in righteousness. I ask You to enable me to be grateful for Your blessings and to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of whatever You know, and I ask You of the good that You know. I seek Your forgiveness for what You know, indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.) [Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3503]. This teaching in the context of prayer highlights its importance for daily spiritual well-being and protection.
