Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan At-Tirmidhi 3403

O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in all affairs and determination in following the right path. I ask You for the grace of being thankful for Your favors and the ability to worship You in the best manner. I ask You for a sound heart and a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know. I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know. Indeed, You are the Knower of all unseen.

Allahumma inni as'alukath-thabata fil-amr, wal-'azeemata 'alar-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalban saleeman, wa lisaanan sadiqan, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa as'aluka min khairi ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka mimma ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamul-ghuyub.

When to Read

Recite this dua whenever you feel overwhelmed by setbacks, when plans don't work out, or when you face repeated difficulties that test your resolve. It's particularly beneficial during moments of self-doubt after experiencing failure, to reaffirm your reliance on Allah and ask for His support to stay firm on your path.

How to Read

Begin with 'Bismillah'. Face the Qiblah if possible. Raise your hands to shoulder or chest level, palms facing upwards. Recite the dua with sincerity and focus, understanding each word's meaning. Reflect on Allah's knowledge and power as you make this supplication. End with salutations upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and then say 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah).

Virtues & Benefits

This profound dua, taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his uncle Al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), directly asks Allah for the strength to remain firm ('thabat') in our commitments and decisions, especially when faced with trials or repeated failures. It also seeks 'azeemah' – a strong resolve to do good and stay on the right path. By asking for the ability to be thankful and worship Him properly, we shift our focus from our failures to Allah's blessings, which can reframe our perspective and strengthen our spirit. Seeking a sound heart and truthful tongue are foundations for inner peace and honest striving.

Source & Authentication

Al-'Abbas bin 'Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to ask Allah.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to ask Allah concerning my religion.' He said: 'O Allah, grant me well-being in my religion, which is my protection, and grant me well-being in my worldly life, and grant me well-being in my Hereafter. O Allah, make my life a provision for every good, and make death a relief for me from every evil.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, teach me something to ask Allah.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and self-sufficiency.' He also said to him: 'O Allah, I ask You for steadfastness in the affair, and I ask You for the resolve to do the right thing, and I ask You for the gratitude for Your blessings, and I ask You for the good worship of You. I ask You for a sound heart, and I ask You for a truthful tongue. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know.' He said: 'These are the supplications that I have asked for myself.' He said: 'O Allah, I ask You for the good of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I seek Your forgiveness for what You know.' Al-'Abbas said: 'Then I asked Him something, and He said: 'Ask Allah for forgiveness and well-being, for no one has been given anything better than them after certainty.' - Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3403 (Hasan)
