Dua for Patience and Steadfastness in the Face of Losing a Home

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 1540

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the disappearance of Your blessings, and the reversal of Your well-being, and the suddenness of Your punishment, and all of Your displeasure. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from ruin, and I seek refuge in You from falling, and I seek refuge in You from drowning, and extreme old age, and I seek refuge in You from being misguided by Satan at the time of death, and I seek refuge in You from dying in Your path fleeing. O Allah, I ask You for patience at the time of decree, and the dwelling of martyrs, and the life of the happy, and victory over the enemies. Indeed, You see what cannot be seen, and You know what is in the chests.

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matik, wa tahawwuli 'afiyatik, wa fuji'ati niqmatik, wa jami'i sakhatik. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal hadmi, wa a'udhu bika minat taraddiy, wa a'udhu bika minal gharaqi, wal harami, wa a'udhu bika an yatakhabbaṭani sh-shayṭanu 'indal mawt, wa a'udhu bika an amuta fi sabilika mudbira. Allahumma inni as'aluk as-sabra 'indal qada'i, wa manzilash shuhada'i, wa 'ishash su'ada'i, wan naṣra 'alal a'da'i, innaka tara ma la yura, wa ta'lamu ma fis sudur.

Virtues & Benefits

This powerful dua encapsulates several vital requests for spiritual and material well-being. It seeks refuge from the loss of Allah's blessings, the reversal of health, and the severity of His punishment, all of which are crucial for enduring any calamity. Crucially, it asks for **patience (sabr)** at the time of divine decree, which is the cornerstone of navigating trials. It also requests the status of martyrs and the life of the happy, signifying a desire for a righteous end and a life well-pleasing to Allah, even amidst suffering. The mention of seeking refuge from ruin and falling directly addresses the fear and instability associated with losing a home.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to seek refuge in Allah from four things, and he would mention them in his prayer: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of the False Messiah.' [This specific wording found in Sunan Abi Dawud 1540 is an elaboration of the general practice of seeking refuge, and it directly addresses calamities like ruin and falling, which are relevant to losing a home. The Prophet ﷺ himself taught supplications encompassing broader categories of seeking refuge, and this detailed version includes elements pertinent to severe material and spiritual loss.]
