اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَاخْلُفْنِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا.
O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better than it.
Allahumma ajirni fi musibati, wakhlufni khayran minha.
When to Read
This dua is profoundly comforting when facing the immense grief and disorientation that comes with losing a beloved mentor. It can be recited immediately after hearing the news, during the mourning period, and whenever feelings of loss and difficulty surface. It's a prayer for divine support through a trial that shakes our foundations, reminding us that even in immense sorrow, there is potential for divine grace and a better outcome.
How to Read
Recite this dua sincerely, with a heart turned towards Allah. Acknowledge the pain of the loss, but simultaneously express your reliance on Allah for strength and solace. Understand that 'reward' here encompasses being granted patience, inner peace, and the ability to draw positive lessons from the experience. The hope for something 'better' is not necessarily a replacement, but a spiritual elevation or a future ease that Allah wills.
Virtues & Benefits
This dua encapsulates the essence of *sabr* (patience) and *tawakkul* (reliance on Allah) in the face of adversity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this dua to the wife of Abu Salamah after his passing, assuring her that Allah would indeed compensate her with something better. Sahih Muslim (918) narrates this. By reciting it, we affirm our belief that Allah is the ultimate Controller, and He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It shifts our focus from the pain of what was lost to the mercy and wisdom of Allah, seeking His recompense both in this life and the next.

Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "When a person suffers a calamity and says: 'Allahumma ajirni fi musibati, wakhlufni khayran minha' (O Allah, reward me in this calamity and compensate me with something better than it), Allah will surely compensate him with something better than it." Umm Salamah said: When Abu Salamah died, I uttered this dua as I was commanded by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and Allah compensated me with Abu Salamah's successor (meaning the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself).
