Dua for Patience and Resilience in Times of Loss

Patience & Sabr
Sahih HadithKitab Al-Jana'iz (Book of Funeral Affairs) 918

Verily, to Allah we belong and verily to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and grant me something better in exchange.

Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn. Allāhumma'jurni fī muṣībatī wa'akhlifnī khayran minhā.

When to Read

This powerful dua is recited when facing any calamity, loss, or significant setback, such as a failed business venture, financial hardship, or personal loss. It's particularly relevant when the initial shock and grief set in, and we need to ground ourselves in Allah's will and seek His reward and better replacement.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and a heartfelt acknowledgment of Allah's decree. Understand that 'to Allah we belong' means our lives and all that we possess are a trust from Him, and 'to Him we return' signifies our ultimate accountability and return to our Creator. When you say 'O Allah, reward me in my affliction,' you are explicitly asking for the immense rewards promised for patience. 'And grant me something better in exchange' is a plea for Allah to replace what was lost with something even more beneficial, whether in this life or the next. It is often said with a sense of calm acceptance after the initial emotional response, focusing on the spiritual aspect of the trial.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a profound expression of faith and submission to Allah's plan. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that by reciting this, Allah grants us reward for our patience during the hardship and provides us with something superior to what was lost. Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated that when Abu Salama died, she recited this dua, and Allah then granted her the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a husband, which was indeed far better. This illustrates the immense blessings Allah bestows upon those who respond to trials with faith and supplication.

Source & Authentication

Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "If a servant (of Allah) is afflicted with an affliction and he remembers what Allah has commanded him, saying: 'Verily, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and grant me that which is better than it,' Allah will grant him that which is better than it." Umm Salama said: When Abu Salama died, I recited this dua as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded me, and Allah gave me a husband better than him (i.e., the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ).
