Dua for Patience and Resilience in Times of Community Crisis

Patience & Sabr
Hasan HadithSunan An-Nasa'i 1305

O Allah, I ask You for patience in the face of what I dislike, and a life after death, and delight in looking at Your Face, and a longing to meet You, without any hardship causing harm or misguiding trials. O Allah, adorn us with the adornment of faith, and make us guides who are rightly guided.

Allahumma inni as'aluka sabran 'ala ma karihtu, wa 'aishan ba'dal mawt, wa ladhdhatan ila an-nadhtari ila wajhik, wa shawqan ila liqa'ik, ghayra dharra'a mudhirratin, wa la fitnatin mudhillatin. Allahumma zayyinna bizinatil imaan, waj'alna hudatan muhtadinin.

When to Read

This powerful dua is perfect to recite when facing difficulties that affect not just yourself but your entire community. Whether it's a natural disaster, a period of economic hardship, or any widespread challenge, turning to Allah with this supplication helps fortify the heart and mind. Recite it during times of uncertainty, when fear and anxiety might be prevalent, as a way to actively seek divine strength and guidance for yourself and those around you.

How to Read

Begin by making sincere intention (niyyah) to seek Allah's help. Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu) if possible. Face the Qiblah, raise your hands slightly, and recite this dua with full concentration and a hopeful heart. Reflect on the meaning of each phrase, internalizing the request for patience, guidance, and protection from trials. It's beneficial to repeat it multiple times, especially during the blessed times like after salah, before breaking your fast (if applicable), or during the night.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua specifically asks Allah for the most crucial elements needed during trying times: 'sabr' (patience) in enduring hardship, a positive outlook towards the hereafter ('aishan ba'dal mawt'), the ultimate delight of seeing Allah's Face, and a yearning for the meeting with Him. It also seeks protection from harmful trials and misguidance, which are often amplified during community crises. The concluding request to be adorned with faith and to become guides themselves highlights the aspiration to not only endure but to positively influence the community through faith and righteous action. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) emphasizes that 'Sabr is half of faith', and this dua directly seeks that vital quality.

Source & Authentication

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas: that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach them this supplication in the same way that he used to teach them a Surah of the Qur'an. He said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka al-thabat fi al-amr, wa as'aluka 'azimah al-rushd, wa as'aluka shukra ni'matik, wa as'aluka husna 'ibadatik, wa as'aluka qalbann saliman, wa as'aluka lisanann sadiqan, wa as'aluka min khayri ma ta'lam, wa a'udhu bika min sharri ma ta'lam, wa astaghfiruka lima ta'lam, innaka anta 'allamu al-ghuyub. (O Allah, I ask You for firmness in the matter, and I ask You for the resolve to follow guidance, and I ask You for the ability to be grateful for Your favor, and I ask You for the best way to worship You. And I ask You for a sound heart, and I ask You for a truthful tongue, and I ask You for the best of what You know, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what You know, and I ask for Your forgiveness for what You know. Verily, You are the Knower of the unseen.)' *Note: The provided dua is a variation found in Sunan An-Nasa'i (1305), which also addresses patience and divine guidance in the context of trials and faith.*
