A Dua for Patience and Wisdom in Raising Children

Patience & Sabr
QuranQuran 25:74

Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and our offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example to the righteous.

Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yunin waj'alna lil-muttaqeena imama.

When to Read

This beautiful dua is perfect for parents at any stage of their child-rearing journey. Recite it during your daily prayers, especially after the obligatory prayers, or at any time you feel overwhelmed, seeking Allah's help to grant you patience and wisdom. It's particularly poignant when you reflect on the immense responsibility of guiding your children and want them to be a source of joy and righteousness for you and the wider community.

How to Read

This dua is a supplication directly from the Quran, so its recitation carries immense weight. Raise your hands as you would during du'a, facing the Qiblah if possible, and call upon Allah with sincerity and humility. Utter the Arabic words with heartfelt intention, reflecting on the meaning and asking Allah to make your family a source of cool eyes (comfort and joy) and to guide you to be leaders in righteousness for the pious. Repeat it regularly, especially during moments of difficulty or when you seek divine assistance in nurturing your children.

Virtues & Benefits

This verse from Surah Al-Furqan offers a profound framework for what a believing family strives for. By asking Allah to make our offspring 'comfort to our eyes' (قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ), we're asking for children who are not a source of worry or distress, but rather bring us happiness, peace, and pride through their faith and good character. Furthermore, the request to 'make us an example to the righteous' (وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا) elevates our ambition beyond our immediate family, seeking to embody Islamic principles so effectively that we become beacons of guidance for others. This dua cultivates a mindset of seeking Allah's aid not just for personal ease, but for the spiritual well-being and exemplary conduct of our entire lineage, fostering the patience and wisdom needed to achieve these noble goals.
