Dua for the Elderly: Seeking Ease and Safety in Travel and Community

Old Age & Elderly
Hasan HadithSunan Abi Dawud 4890

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from straying or being led astray, from stumbling or being caused to stumble, from wronging or being wronged, and from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly.

Bismillah, tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika an adilla aw udalla, aw azilla aw uzalla, aw azlima aw uzlama, aw ajhala aw yujhala 'alayya.

When to Read

This comprehensive dua is perfect for anyone, but especially for our elders, before embarking on any journey, whether it's a long trip or even just heading out to the mosque or a community gathering. It encapsulates seeking Allah's protection in every aspect of potential vulnerability.

How to Read

Recite this dua sincerely with conviction before setting out. Place your trust fully in Allah (tawakkul). Take a moment to reflect on the meaning of seeking refuge from straying, causing others to stray, and all forms of harm. For those with mobility challenges or who may feel less confident in public spaces, reciting this dua can bring immense peace of mind.

Virtues & Benefits

This dua is a powerful shield. It encompasses seeking Allah's protection from misguidance (both self and being misled), from mistakes that could cause one to slip or others to slip because of them, from causing injustice or facing injustice, and from ignorance or being treated ignorantly. It's a holistic prayer for safety and well-being, particularly vital for the elderly who may be more susceptible to these concerns when navigating the world.

Source & Authentication

Narrated by Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "If a person says when he leaves his house: 'In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah,' it will be said to him: 'You have been sufficed and protected,' and the Shaitan will stay away from him." Another narration adds: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from straying or being led astray, from stumbling or being caused to stumble, from wronging or being wronged, and from acting foolishly or being treated foolishly."
