Dua for Strength, Soundness of Mind, and Continued Usefulness in Old Age

Old Age & Elderly
Sahih HadithSahih Muslim 742

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا، وَرِزْقًا طَيِّبًا، وَعَمَلًا مُتَقَبَّلًا

O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, pure provisions, and deeds that are accepted.

Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan

When to Read

This is a profound dua the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often recite upon waking in the morning. While not specifically for old age, its essence of asking for 'beneficial knowledge' and 'accepted deeds' is eternally relevant. For those in their golden years, this dua can be a beautiful way to reorient oneself each day, seeking continued spiritual growth, meaningful engagement with life, and a connection to Allah that remains vibrant and purposeful. It’s a daily reset, asking for blessings that enable one to continue contributing positively, whether through wisdom shared, acts of kindness, or simply by maintaining a strong connection with the Creator.

How to Read

Recite this dua with sincerity and conviction, preferably after Fajr prayer. Imagine the 'beneficial knowledge' as understanding Allah's creation and commands better, 'pure provisions' as sustenance that is halal and brings contentment, and 'accepted deeds' as acts of worship and service that are pleasing to Allah. Visualize yourself using your remaining years to learn, to help others, and to draw closer to your Lord.

Virtues & Benefits

This comprehensive dua encompasses vital aspects of a Muslim's life. 'Beneficial knowledge' ('ilman naafi'an) is knowledge that leads to acting upon it and brings one closer to Allah. 'Pure provisions' (rizqan tayyiban) refers to lawful, wholesome sustenance that benefits both the body and soul. 'Accepted deeds' ('amalan mutaqabbalan) are those acts of worship and righteousness that Allah accepts from us, which is the ultimate goal of our striving. By asking for these three things, especially in later life, one seeks a continued capacity for growth, contribution, and spiritual fulfillment, ensuring that one's remaining time is spent in a way that is pleasing to Allah and beneficial to oneself and others.
